South Lions emerged victorious in the OFSAA Western Bowl title clash against Sault Ste. Mary St. Mary’s Knights with a resounding 33-0 triumph at St. Clair College in Windsor late on Monday. Two-way player Andre Thompson showcased his versatility by throwing a touchdown pass to Chase Smith, and he also returned an interception for an extra point with a 45-yard run.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, South coach Mike Stenning praised the resilience of his 8-1 team, noting a characteristic slow start followed by a remarkable second-half effort. Stenning expressed pride in proving the team’s standing among the state’s strongest contenders. Running back Kanye Nethersole contributed significantly with two touchdowns and an interception by linebacker Christopher Hammond. Despite the convincing win, Stenning highlighted missed opportunities, mentioning a called-back interception and instances where adverse weather conditions affected plays.
Grateful for the support, the Lions thanked the Western Football Team for lending their second court. The challenging weather in the fourth quarter prompted the use of coats to keep the players warm on the sideline, ensuring the quarterback could return comfortably for subsequent series. Overall, the victory marked South’s first bowl win in seven years, leaving a positive imprint on the team’s season and contributions from key players.
