Castles in Scotland are expensive and very remote, but you can buy a castle in Nova Scotia for less than a million dollars. Castle Moffett, as the property was known when it was operated as a five-star bed and breakfast, is listed at $999,999 (that’s less than a million dollars! ) and includes 163 acres of land with water views and private access at Bras d’Or Lake. Images from real estate ads show a very castle-like structure, with battlemented ramparts (one of which hides a satellite dish) and a moat-shaped stream flowing below the main part of the structure bamboo, protected by a harrow. Looting by the invaders was not a problem as aerial photographs showed the compound nestled among trees and far from any other buildings. The view from the Trans-Canada Highway is of a simple gate and cedar-lined driveway, while the castle is barely visible through the trees.
The listing notes the great room has two-story slate floors with bay windows, a fireplace, and two staircases leading to the upper level. The property also has 10 suites with fireplaces and propane bathrooms. Downstairs is the caregiver’s office with a half bathroom and access to the creek and yard. The property also has a gym, massage room, and sauna. The now-closed B&B listing mentions a “dungeon lounge” recreation room. The house was built in 1992 and is being sold fully furnished and decorated.
“The property has undergone multiple renovations under current ownership and will require additional renovations under new ownership,” the listing states. “The buyer is responsible for any additional improvements after closing and will enjoy this mansion for many years to come. ” Or in other words (and apologies to all Latin linguists) “Caveat castellum emptor”.
